And The Winner Is…

Amy Kalscheur is a Christian homeschooling wife and mother of 8 children.  On August 11, 2011 she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, breast cancer. While her cancer was early stage II grade 1, she was told that she would need to be treated aggressively because this type of cancer, while curable, tended to become very hostile.  Amy would spend the next six months in chemotherapy and received a double mastectomy with lymph node dissection and reconstruction on February 24th.  Recovery is going well and Amy is looking forward to six weeks of radiation and will continue with Herceptin for the following year.

Over the last 8 months, Amy has shared her journey with others, telling them of her fears and worries.  She soon realized that many people have the same concerns and fears as she did, even if their struggle was not with cancer. She quickly found out that what she was going through was not unique to her disease.  Amy began to realize that cancer was not something to identify herself by, and that cancer did not make her special. She understands that fear is not what unifies us, but a deeper connection. Indeed, it is Christ alone that makes us special, and it is Christ who brings us together. Through her journey Amy has come to realize that is it not cancer that is her “Big C”, that Christ is.

“God is good…All the time.” -Amy Kalscheur

Although she credits those around her for being her inspiration, it is Amy who has inspired many! We were flooded with nominations from her friends and family who had no shortage of wonderful things to say about her. They credit her unfaltering faith and her outpouring of love given freely as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and dear friend. Always with a smile and a joke, she finds strength and humor where many find only sadness and pain. Amy Kalscheur truly exemplifies the characteristics that we love and miss so much in Stephenie. We are so honored to recognize Amy and the countless others who remain steadfast in their faith while fighting such a courageous battle.

Here are just a few things that her family and friends told us about Amy:

“Amy’s reasoning for her cancer is that “I’m special.”  Her devotion to God and her family are invincible.  Her strength gives all who know her strength to live and love.  “God is Good.  All the Time.”  -Amy’s Mother, Patricia Kicinski

“She is a great listener, a wonderful story-teller, and a staunch advocate.  We knew that as a mother, she had no equal.  But it was only after she was diagnosed with breast cancer that we saw just what she embodied.  Amy chose to view her shocking diagnosis and impending protocol-not as a curse, but as a “journey”-Bernard/Sharon Bentley-second cousin

“She is still able to put her own issues aside and listen to others.  I rode with her to an event last year, and she didn’t once bring up her cancer; yet she continued to ask about how I was doing?  She has not lost her sense of humor through it all.  She will tell you how she has leaned on God to give her strength.  I will tell you God has used her to give us strength by her example of faith.”-Jeanette Bowling, Friend
